US Congress Introduces Bills to Ban TikTok

SUMMARY: Many in Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, and President Biden’s administration are discussing banning the TikTok app in the United States. There is more than one bill introduced in Congress to provide the legal authority for the government or the President to act against TikTok which could result in a nationwide ban of the TikTok App. The TikTok CEO testified at a US House committee hearing, on March 23, 2023, which included many challenging questions.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Many in government are concerned that the Chinese Communist Party can force TikTok to provide data on American citizens or force it to run “disinformation” campaigns, which they say would pose a risk to national security.
  • One organization, the ACLUsays a ban would violate free speech, Creators say it takes away from their message and income, and some progressive members of Congress say the necessity of a ban is unproven.
  • Currently, TikTok has been working to move all data into US data centers with monitoring by a 3rd party company, in an agreement with a government committee. Some people don’t think this prevents the Chinese government from accessing the data.
  • One suggestion is that ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, could satisfy critics if it spun off TikTok by selling it to a non-Chinese company.
